1. What is the nature of JSSD? Has it obtained official approval from China’s Ministry of Education?

China’s Ministry of Education approved the establishment of XJTU-HKUST Joint School of Sustainable Development (hereinafter JSSD) on 22 April, 2014. JSSD is a non-profit and jointly-run school affiliated to both Xi’an Jiaotong University (hereinafter XJTU) and The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (hereinafter HKUST) with campus building located within the campus of XJTU in Xi’an. JSSD has the same functions as other schools in both universities, including undergraduate and postgraduate education, academic research and technology innovation.

2. What are the education objectives of JSSD?

JSSD is to serve the economic and social needs of the contemporary China, with a particular focus on sustainable development, including but not limited to the area of energy, materials, environment, infrastructure, population and social and economic development. JSSD aims to nurture top-class research personnel, engineers, management executives and entrepreneurs.

3. What is education model of JSSD?

JSSD shall take reference to the well-rounded education model of HKUST in setting up its departments and teaching systems (with appropriate modification to cater to the conditions in XJTU), and explore other paradigms of talent cultivation in line with international practices and standards. JSSD would apply the internationally adopted credit system and establish credit transfer system with other prestigious universities around the world, enabling students to select first-class courses from other universities. JSSD’s teaching focuses on the foundation and practices. Classes will adopt the style of seminar, and encourage active interactions between students and teachers. By applying teaching and self-learning simultaneously, students would gain the abilities of acquiring knowledge from various channels independently.

4. How are the qualifications of JSSD’s faculty?

JSSD employs high-caliber faculty staff globally, and adopts international model for management. All JSSD faculty staff met the professional requirements of the academic standings of the departments of HKUST that are outstanding among the international counterparts. In order to fulfill the high teaching standards, JSSD also employs a group of tenured professors from HKUST (with more than 10 years of teaching experience). These tenured professors will be responsible for teaching, as well as being the course group leader to take charge of course importation, transformation, value-addition and innovation. Furthermore, they would be responsible for setting up course plans and monitoring the teaching quality.

5. What majors shall JSSD provide? How would students choose their major?

JSSD provides 3 majors: Sustainable Energy, Sustainable Materials, and Sustainable Systems. Undergraduates would take on School Foundation courses in the first year and to choose a major at the second year.

6. What academic programs shall JSSD offer?

JSSD offers undergraduate and postgraduate programs respectively in Sustainable Energy, Sustainable Materials, and Sustainable Systems. JSSD also provides a collaborative program ‘XJTU-HKUST Full-time Dual Degree PhD program’ (abbr. DDP).

7. What academic degrees shall JSSD confer?

JSSD shall confer respective degrees to students who have completed the program and satisfied the necessary requirements for graduation. Specifically, qualified undergraduates will be conferred dual bachelor degrees of XJTU and HKUST; qualified postgraduate students will be conferred dual master or dual doctorate degrees of XJTU and HKUST.

8. How many students would JSSD recruit each year?

JSSD shall recruit 60 students per major each year for undergraduate programs, 20 students per major each year for master programs, and 15 students per major each year for doctorate programs.

9. How is housing and residential life for JSSD students?

The on-campus residential halls in XJTU provide a comfortable and convenient quadruple room with air-conditioning. The conditions of on-campus and off-campus accommodation in HKUST are exceling in the world. JSSD students will enjoy the same teaching & living facilities, social security and safety guarantees with all other students when living in XJTU and HKUST, respectively.

10. What career opportunities would JSSD graduates have?

JSSD provides three levels of education trainings towards bachelor, master and doctorate degree conferment.  Graduates finished their bachelor degree can also choose to pursue advanced studies within JSSD or at other distinguished universities domestically or overseas. JSSD’s high-quality graduates aim to work at large multinational companies, government departments, non-governmental organizations, private firms, educational institutions, and consulting companies etc.
